What Is an LLM Gateway? A Plain-English Definition (2026)

Updated · · Facts and limits are dated; check the linked sources.

An LLM gateway is a single API that sits between your application and one or more large language model providers. Your app sends every model request to the gateway; the gateway forwards it to the right provider, applies your keys, limits and rules, retries or falls back on errors, and records what happened. Most LLM gateways accept the OpenAI chat format, so adopting one is usually a base URL change.

What an LLM gateway does

An LLM gateway plays the same role for model calls that an API gateway plays for web services:

  • Unified API. One endpoint and one request format for models from different providers.
  • Credential management. Provider API keys are stored once in the gateway, not in every service; apps get a gateway key instead.
  • Routing and fallback. The gateway chooses a provider or model per request and tries another when one returns a rate limit (429) or server error (5xx).
  • Limits and spend control. Per-key or per-team request limits and budgets.
  • Observability. Logs of requests, latency, token usage and cost, often exportable to tracing tools such as Langfuse.
  • Policy checks. Some gateways inspect prompts, responses or tool calls before they pass through. SentioGate's version is its tool guard, which stops runaway agent loops.

LLM gateway vs LLM router vs LLM proxy

The terms overlap, and vendors use them loosely:

TermUsual emphasisExample question it answers
LLM proxyForwarding requests through one endpoint, often self-hosted"How do all my services reach the providers through one place?"
LLM routerChoosing which model or provider answers each request"Which model should handle this prompt, and what if it fails?"
LLM gatewayThe full control layer: keys, routing, limits, logs, policy"How do we manage every model call across the company?"

In practice most products do some of all three. SentioGate calls itself an AI LLM router because model selection (model: "auto") and fallback are its focus. The LLM router hub compares routers; the LiteLLM vs Bifrost vs Helicone vs SentioGate guide compares gateways.

Hosted vs self-hosted LLM gateways

A hosted gateway is a service you call over the internet; there is nothing to deploy. A self-hosted gateway, such as LiteLLM, runs on your own servers, so traffic never leaves your infrastructure and you operate it yourself. SentioGate is hosted only and runs on a global edge network.

BYOK LLM gateways

A bring-your-own-key (BYOK) gateway uses your provider accounts: each provider bills you at its own prices, and the gateway charges for its service separately or not at all. SentioGate charges 0% token markup on BYOK traffic. Many other gateways support BYOK too. See the BYOK LLM gateway guide.

When you need an LLM gateway

You probably need one when:

  • you call more than one model provider;
  • you have hit rate limits and want automatic fallback;
  • provider keys are spread across services and you want them in one place;
  • you need one view of usage and cost across providers.

You probably do not need one for a single script calling a single model. If you need an MCP gateway, prompt management or enterprise governance, look at Portkey or similar tools; SentioGate has no MCP gateway.

How to try an LLM gateway

With SentioGate, point any OpenAI SDK at https://api.sentiogate.dev/v1 with an sg_live_ key and send model: "auto". Without provider keys, requests use the free community pool, a shared community evaluation tier (600 requests per 5 hours per user, no credit card); add your own keys in the Vault to switch to BYOK. The free chatbot API quickstart has copy-paste examples.

FAQ

What is an LLM gateway in simple terms?

It is one API in front of many language model providers. Your app sends requests to the gateway, and the gateway forwards them to the right provider, manages keys and limits, retries on errors and logs usage.

What is the difference between an LLM gateway and an LLM router?

A router focuses on choosing the model or provider for each request and falling back when one fails. A gateway is the wider control layer that also covers keys, limits, logs and policy. Many products do both.

Is an LLM gateway the same as an API gateway?

It is the same idea applied to model calls. A general API gateway routes web traffic; an LLM gateway understands model requests, tokens, provider rate limits and model fallbacks.

Do I need an LLM gateway for one model?

Usually not. A gateway pays off when you use several providers, need automatic fallback on rate limits, or want keys, usage and cost in one place.
