SentioGate vs OpenRouter (2026): BYOK Router or Model Marketplace?
OpenRouter and SentioGate both give you one OpenAI-compatible endpoint with routing and fallback. They differ in who you pay: OpenRouter resells inference from 80+ providers through prepaid credits, while SentioGate routes across the provider accounts you already have, and each provider bills you directly.
Below is a side-by-side of the facts that decide it, each linked to its source and checked on the date shown.
SentioGate vs OpenRouter at a glance
| As of Oct 30, 2026 | SentioGate | OpenRouter |
|---|---|---|
| What it is | A hosted BYOK LLM router on a global edge network: one OpenAI-compatible endpoint in front of the provider keys you add. [source] | A model marketplace and router: one account and one API for 600+ models from 80+ providers. [source] |
| API | OpenAI-compatible at https://api.sentiogate.dev/v1, plus an Anthropic Messages endpoint (/v1/messages) for Claude Code. [source] | OpenAI-compatible: change the base URL and model names to migrate. [source] |
| How you pay for inference | BYOK: each provider bills you directly for inference. 0% token markup. [source] | Prepaid credits; each request deducts its cost at the provider's list price. No markup on provider pricing. [source] |
| Platform fees | Flat plans: a free 90-day beta, then Pro $9/month or Team $39/month. No percentage fee. [source] | 5.5% on credit purchases (Standard) or 8% (Business), charged when you buy credits, never per request. [source] |
| Bring your own keys | BYOK is the core model: keys are stored encrypted, with up to 5 keys per provider in priority order. [source] | BYOK on Standard and Business: $25,000 of list-price inference per month with no fee, then 5%. Not on the Free plan. [source] |
| Free tier | Free community pool: 600 requests per 5 hours per user with model "auto", no credit card. A shared community evaluation tier, not for production. [source] | Free (":free") model variants: 20 requests/minute and 50/day, or 1,000/day once you have bought at least $10 of credits. [source] |
| Routing | model: "auto" picks the cheapest qualifying model among the providers you enabled; any provider/model id pins one. [source] | Provider routing with automatic fallback to other providers for the same model, optional fallback models, and an auto router (openrouter/auto) that adds no fee. [source] |
| Failures and fallback | On a 429 or 5xx, the request is retried on your next key for that provider or on the next-cheapest qualifying model, with no code changes. [source] | An attempt that errors is not charged for its model tokens, so with fallback you pay only for the run that answers. [source] |
| Model reach | Only the providers whose keys you add (OpenAI, Anthropic, Gemini, Groq, DeepSeek, Mistral, xAI, OpenRouter, or your own OpenAI-compatible endpoint). [source] | A model marketplace and router: one account and one API for 600+ models from 80+ providers. [source] |
When to pick SentioGate
- You already have OpenAI, Anthropic, Gemini, Groq or DeepSeek accounts and want one endpoint over them with no percentage fee.
- You want automatic failover between your own keys and providers without writing retry code.
- You run Claude Code and want it on your own Anthropic key behind the same router.
- You want to try a router before adding any keys: the free community pool gives 600 requests per 5 hours per user.
When to pick OpenRouter
- You want one bill and one balance instead of separate provider accounts.
- You need the long tail: 600+ models from 80+ providers, without signing up to each provider.
- You need in-region (EU or US) routing, workspaces, or enterprise SSO from a large, established marketplace.
- You want to pay with crypto or AliPay, or prefer prepaid credits to monthly provider invoices.
You do not have to choose: SentioGate accepts an OpenRouter key as one of your providers, so you can route your direct keys first and keep OpenRouter for models you do not have a direct account for.
FAQ
Is SentioGate cheaper than OpenRouter?
It depends on how you pay. OpenRouter charges inference at list price plus a 5.5% (Standard) or 8% (Business) fee on credit purchases, and BYOK is fee-free up to $25,000 of list-price inference per month, then 5%. SentioGate has no percentage fee: your providers bill you directly and SentioGate charges a flat plan after the free beta. Compare your monthly volume against both.
Can I use OpenRouter and SentioGate together?
Yes. Add an OpenRouter key in the SentioGate Vault next to your direct provider keys. SentioGate can then fail over from a direct key to OpenRouter, or use OpenRouter for models you have no direct account for.
Does SentioGate have more models than OpenRouter?
No. OpenRouter lists 600+ models from 80+ providers. SentioGate routes only across the providers whose keys you add (or the free community pool). If you need breadth without provider accounts, OpenRouter is the better fit.
Is switching from OpenRouter to SentioGate a code change?
Both are OpenAI-compatible, so switching is a base URL, API key and model name change. SentioGate takes model "auto" to pick the cheapest qualifying model, or a provider/model id to pin one.
