Helicone Alternative: When You Need a BYOK Router vs Full LLM Observability (2026)

Published · Facts and limits are dated; check the linked sources.

Helicone is an LLM observability platform first—built around request logs, session traces, prompt management and evaluations—with an AI Gateway layer for routing and fallbacks. SentioGate is a narrower tool: a hosted, OpenAI-compatible router for your own provider keys that ranks models by cost, latency and health. We build SentioGate, so we have a stake in this comparison. Every claim about Helicone below links to its public documentation or repository, and there is a section on when you should pick Helicone instead.

As of 2026-10-26. Helicone facts below were checked against its GitHub repository and documentation (see our four-way gateway comparison); check the linked sources for the latest details.

When Helicone is the better choice

  • Your main question is "what are our prompts doing in production?" Helicone gives you request inspection, multi-step session tracing, prompt versioning and evaluation workflows that SentioGate does not attempt to build.
  • You want to self-host with Docker Compose. Helicone's main platform repository is Apache-2.0 and supports self-hosting; SentioGate is hosted only.
  • You want observability without changing how you pick models. You can use Helicone purely to log and analyze calls to a single provider.

When a BYOK router fits better

  • Your main problem is routing, rate limits and cost across several providers. You already have keys for OpenAI, Gemini, Groq, Mistral or OpenRouter, and you want model: "auto" to pick the most affordable healthy model per request and fail over on 429 or 5xx errors.
  • You don't want plaintext prompts stored in a third-party log. SentioGate records routing metadata, latency and token counts for your dashboard, not raw prompt text.
  • You want flat, predictable pricing. SentioGate is free during its 90-day beta (25,000 requests/month soft cap), with paid plans from $9/month (pricing) and 0% token markup on your own provider keys.

Calling SentioGate with the OpenAI SDK

import os
from openai import OpenAI

client = OpenAI(
    base_url="https://api.sentiogate.dev/v1",
    api_key=os.environ["SENTIOGATE_API_KEY"],
)

resp = client.chat.completions.create(
    model="auto", # cost-first routing across the providers enabled in your Vault
    messages=[{"role": "user", "content": "Classify this support request."}],
)
print(resp.choices[0].message.content)

Add your provider keys in the Vault first. See the API docs for request headers, the Python and TypeScript SDKs, and the router object returned on every response.

SentioGate's limits

  • Not a tracing or eval platform. You get per-request routing metadata and a usage dashboard, not prompt playgrounds or evaluation suites.
  • Hosted only. No self-host option.
  • No Anthropic Messages endpoint (/v1/messages) and no MCP gateway today. See the OpenCode guide if you use Claude Code.
  • Community pool is for evaluation only: without BYOK keys, requests use a shared community evaluation tier (150 requests per 5 hours per user during beta).
