Free LLM API Without a Credit Card: Developer Options and Rate Limits (2026)
When you are building a prototype, running a hackathon project or testing an OpenAI SDK integration, you shouldn't have to enter a credit card just to verify your request loop works. Several providers offer free API tiers, each with strict rate limits or data-usage trade-offs. This guide compares the main free OpenAI-compatible options, explains their rate limits, and shows how to move from a free evaluation tier to multi-provider routing without changing your client code. We build SentioGate, so we describe our own free chatbot API & free AI API community pool honestly alongside the other options.
As of 2026-10-26. Free tiers change frequently; always check the linked provider pages for current caps and terms.
Free OpenAI-compatible API options compared
| Provider | Credit card required? | What you get on the free tier | Key limits to know |
|---|---|---|---|
OpenRouter :free models | No | 25+ models ending in :free via an OpenAI-compatible endpoint | 20 requests/minute and 50 requests/day on accounts with under 10 credits purchased; shared across all :free models |
| Google Gemini API | No (Free tier in supported regions) | Free tier access to selected Gemini models, including an OpenAI-compatible endpoint | Per-project RPM, TPM and RPD caps; check Google's terms on how free-tier prompts are used |
| Groq | No (Free tier) | Fast inference on open-weight models via /openai/v1 | Strict organization-wide RPM, RPD, TPM and TPD caps |
| SentioGate community pool | No | OpenAI-compatible endpoint (model: "auto") on a shared community evaluation tier | 150 requests per 5 hours per user during beta; returns 429 upstream_rate_limited with Retry-After when shared capacity is busy |
Quickstart: call a free OpenAI-compatible endpoint
With SentioGate, you can create an account without a credit card, generate a sg_live_... key, and call /v1/chat/completions immediately using the standard OpenAI SDK:
import os
from openai import OpenAI
client = OpenAI(
base_url="https://api.sentiogate.dev/v1",
api_key=os.environ["SENTIOGATE_API_KEY"],
)
resp = client.chat.completions.create(
model="auto",
messages=[{"role": "user", "content": "Write a haiku about rate limits."}],
)
print(resp.choices[0].message.content)
While you have no provider keys in your Vault, model: "auto" uses the free community pool—a shared community evaluation tier on a shared community evaluation tier, capped at 150 requests per 5 hours per user.
Moving from free prototyping to production without code changes
Every free tier eventually hits a wall:
- OpenRouter's 50 requests/day cap across all
:freemodels runs out quickly in testing (see our OpenRouter 429 guide). - Gemini and Groq free tiers return
429on bursts or daily caps (see our Gemini 429 and Groq 429 guides). - SentioGate's community pool is a shared community evaluation tier meant for evaluating the API, not for production traffic.
The advantage of starting behind an OpenAI-compatible router is that graduating to production requires zero code changes: add your own Gemini, Groq, OpenRouter or OpenAI keys in the SentioGate Vault, enable the models you want, and the exact same model: "auto" call now routes across your own keys with automatic 429 failover at 0% token markup.
SentioGate's limits
- The community pool is not for production. It is a shared community evaluation tier with shared upstream capacity.
- Hosted only, with no Anthropic
/v1/messagesendpoint and no MCP gateway today. See our gateway comparison.
